Srinagar: Shops and business establishments in Shopian remained closed on Thursday following a call given by an amalgam Majlis-e-Mashawarat to protest against the CBI for what they claim has done a shoddy probe into the death of two women in May this year.
The amalgam, which had called for a strike purely on the
basis of media reports, claimed that the CBI was clearing
every one in the case including the police officials.
Transport remained off the roads in the town, 52 kms
from here, in response to the day-long strike called by the
amalgam, which was formed immediately after violent protests
rocked the valley following recovery of bodies of two women --
Nilofer and her sister-in-law Aasiya-- on May 30.
The CBI, which will only submit its report before the
Jammu and Kashmir High Court on December 14, refused to
comment on the claims of the amalgam.
However, highly-placed sources in the agency said that a
representative of the amalgam, which was spearheading the
47-day long agitation, was present at every step of the probe.
Meanwhile, Bar Association Shopian has filed a petition
in the High Court challenging sessions court order for
allowing re-examination by the CBI of witnesses, who had
recorded their confession statement before a magistrate in
June this year alleging that they had heard cries of women
coming from a police vehicle.
