Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir government will
soon empower panchayats at par with other parts of the country
to ensure effective decentralisation of powers at the grass
root level, a J&K minister said on Saturday.
"Government is committed to empower panchayati raj
institutions at par with the other parts of the country to
ensure effective decentralisation of powers at the grass root
level in the state," Minister for Health and Horticulture Sham
Lal Sharma said while addressing a public rally at Akhnoor,
35 km from here.
He said the aim of holding panchayat election was to
empower people at the grass root level so that they can become
a part of decision-making and plan formulation.
The Minister said the state was all set to have a
3-tier panchayati system as per the provisions of 73rd
amendment of the Constitution.
He said enhanced representation of women in panchayats
was possible due to the 33 per cent reservation given to them
in these elections.
The Minister and officers also interacted with the
newly elected members and congratulated them over their
