Srinagar: Storms across Kashmir have thrown
life out of gear for people in the Valley forcing authorities
to announce closure of all schools to ensure safety of the
students.

"All the schools government-run as well as private
-- shall remain closed today due to the windstorm to ensure
safety of the students," an official of the Divisional
Administration said here today. However, all offices shall
remain open, he said.

High speed winds at 30 knots per hour have been blowing
across the Valley since last night, causing extensive damage
to residential houses and public infrastructure in many
places.

An official of the Natural Disaster Management Cell said
roof top damages have been reported from many places in Valley
due to the windstorm.

"A group of tourists had narrow escape when a tree fell
on the hut they were staying in Pahalgam resort in south
Kashmir," the official said.

He said many tourists evacuated from Dal Lake by Police
as a precautionary measuring in view of possible overturning
of the houseboats due to the storm.

Power supply has been snapped as a precautionary measure
as electricity poles have been uprooted at many places. Phone
and power lines have also been snapped in many areas.

The Met department has said the windstorm will recede by
this afternoon.
