Srinagar: Surrendered militants in Jammu and Kashmir will now be extended benefits of a government scheme which provides for employment to one of the family members of a person killed in militancy-related incidents.

The state government today approved the extension of benefits of the scheme, SRO-43 (appointment on compassionate grounds), to surrendered militants. The decision was taken at a high level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, an official spokesman said.

Omar directed the concerned departments to urgently formulate a proposal in this regard for preferring the same to the central government for funding the scheme.

By this path breaking decision, any surrendered militant if killed by any terrorist will be entitled to the ex-gratia relief and job opportunity to his next of kin.

The next of kin of such surrendered militants will also be entitled to the cash compensation of Rs 4 lakh in lieu of the job.
