Srinagar: Terrorists opened fire on a convoy of Shashtra Seema Bal (SSB) in Srinagar on Friday evening, killing one jawan and injuring at least eight others.
The ambush took place on the Hazratbal-Ganderbal road in Zakura on the outskirts of Srinagar.
The SSB personnel were returning to camp from patrol duty when the attack took place around 7.30 pm. There were six vehicles carrying the jawans.
“Three companies of an SSB patrol party were returning to camp. The terrorists opened fire on one of the vehicles,” IG SSB Deepak Kumar said.
One jawan was martyred while eight others were injured, four of them critically. The injured were admitted to hospital.
“The jawans couldn't aggressively retaliate given the civilian population,” the officer said.
Meanwhile, the security forces have launched a massive search operation in the area which is still underway.
The terrorists are believed to have fled the scene after the attack.
The latest attack comes days after the Indian Army carried out “surgical strikes” against several terror camps in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir.
