Shimla: Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Sunday warned Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra against reducing the period of Amarnath Yatra and threatened to launch a nationwide agitation if he went ahead with his plan.

Addressing a press conference here, VHP spokesman Surinder Jain claimed Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was not in favour of reducing the yatra, but Vohra was doing it at the behest of PDP leaders Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti.

Amarnath yatra after Kailash yatra is not only the most important for Hindus from religious point of view, but it also fosters national integration, Jain said.

He regretted that the governor has unilaterally taken the decision to reduce the yatra by 15 days without consulting the Hindu organisations.

Vohra, the VHP spokesman said, had earlier tried to hurt the feeling of Hindus by surrendering the land given by the court on the alternative route of yatra for Lungar.

He warned that the VHP would launch agitation to seek Vohra's resignation if he did not respond to the sentiments of Hindus.
