Ranchi: The Bharat bandh called by the
non-UPA and non-NDA parties against price rise along with the
shut-down by Maoists paralysed normal life in Jharkhand on Tuesday.
"The bandh was peaceful. A total of 267 supporters were
arrested for imposing shut-down in Ranchi city," a senior
police officer told agency here.
Meanwhile, the 48-hour shutdown called by the CPI(Maoist)
would end tonight.
Protesters blocked rail traffic at several areas and held
up Rajdhani Express near Giridih. They also disrupted road
traffic on Grand Trunk Road, police said.
In Jamshedpur alone, half-a-dozen local trains were
cancelled as bandh supporters clambered up on locomotives
demanding `control in rising prices`.
Roads in Kodarma, Hazaribagh, Palamau, Giridih, Godda,
Dumka, Jamtara, Deogarh, East and West Singhbhum districts
wore a deserted look.
The Railways have already cancelled/diverted some trains
since yesterday following the Maoist-sponsored bandh, which
disrupted mineral excavation work in naxal-pockets.
The Maoists are demanding production of six of their
cadres, who had allegedly been arrested recently.
