Ranchi: With the minimum temperatures plummeting across Jharkhand, Congress today demanded that the government should take `immediate and effective steps` to mitigate sufferings of the homeless.
"Today, I will write to chief secretary to increase the number of points where bonfires are lit to help the homeless beat the biting chill, besides speeding up distribution of blankets to the poor," PCC president Pradeep Kumar Balmchau said here.

Referring to cold-related casualties, Balmachu said "The government should come out with an official toll and, wherever necessary, adequately compensate the families of the victims."

Kanke experienced a minimum of zero degree Celsius yesterday, while the mercury hovered between three and six deg C in most parts of the state, weathermen said.
