Efforts to rehabilitate Gulgulias community

Jharkhand Disaster Management Minister Mannan Mallick said he would make efforts in rehabilitating the Gulgulias community who beg for a living.

Dhanbad (Jharkhand): Jharkhand Disaster Management Minister Mannan Mallick said he would make efforts in rehabilitating the Gulgulias community who beg for a living.

"I have sent a letter to Dhanbad Deputy Commissioner Prashant Kumar, asking him to survey and give a report on the Gulgulias within one week. We will try to rehabilitate them under the existing schemes," Mallick, also holds the AHD and Fisheries portfolio, said here yesterday.

A couple of months ago Chief Minister Hemant Soren distributed responsibilities among his cabinet ministers to look after different districts and Mallick has got to look after the development and welfare of the Dhanbad district.

In his effort to give a dignified existence to the Gulgulias, K Sankaranarayanan, who was the Governor of Jharkhand in 2009/10 before moving to Maharashtra, had engaged 18 men and as many women from the community in a training programme in sewing and motor driving through an NGO.

But the programme was shelved after Sankaranarayanan shifted to Maharashtra as Governor.

Then there were about 4000 members of the community roaming around begging in Dhanbad Sadar, Jharia, Nirsa, Baghmara and Baliapur in the district.
