Ranchi: Crediting the people for the peaceful conduct of the first phase of the 5-phase panchayat polling in Jharkhand, Chief Minister Arjun Munda on Saturday said his government was keen on devolution of powers and would like to see its priorities reflected through the 3-tier panchayat system.

“The peaceful and heavy polling is an indication that the people of the state want to establish ‘suraj and swaraj’ through the panchayat system, which will fulfill Mahatma Gandhi’s dream," Munda told a news conference soon after the completion of the first phase polling which recorded voter turnout between 64 percent and 69 percent.

Appealing to the people to come out in large numbers in the remaining four phases of polling to the rural bodies, Munda said his administration would keep the traditional tribal system intact while ensuring development.

“Panchayat elections are being held after 32 years, which will help self-governance and self-rule and make the administration accountable to the people,” he added.
