Jamshedpur: East Singhbhum district administration on Friday launched anti-encroachment drive in Marine drive and Ramnagar localities here.

"The anti-encroachment drive was peaceful as the residents themselves evacuated in view of the notice already served by the administration," Additional District Magistrate Vijay Kumar Singh said.

Though an elaborate security arrangement including deployment of Rapid Action Force, riot vehicles and fire-fighters were made to maintain law and order but people themselves vacated their dwelling units allegedly built on encroached land.

Singh said the anti-encroachment drive was being carried out on the directive of High Court.

We have already demolished half a dozen dwelling units from Marine Drive and Ramnagar and have targeted to remove altogether 160 such houses, he said adding that the drive would pave way for construction of approach road for Toll Bridge linking Jamshedpur-Adityapur (Saraikela-Kharswan district).

The newly constructed Toll Bridge was likely to be inaugurated on July 17.

Meanwhile, the newly elected Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) member of parliament, Dr. Ajay Kumar, a former IPS officer, visited the spot and appealed the state government to make an alternative arrangement for the affected families.
