Ranchi: Seeking clarifications, the Jharkhand Governor has returned to the state assembly a bill granting second language-status to 11 languages, an official said on Tuesday.
The clarifications are based on a memorandum submitted to Governor Syed Ahmad by people speaking Bhojpuri and Maithili languages, the source said.
In the monsoon session, the Jharkhand assembly had passed the relevant bill. Besides nine tribal languages, Bengali and Oriya were also accorded the second language-status. Thereafter the bill was sent to the governor for approval.
"The governor has sought clarification as to on which ground Bengali and Oriya were accorded the second languages status," an official in the governor`s office told a news agency.
The state government`s decision invited sharp reaction from Bhojpuri and Maithili speaking people who asked the criteria for according the second language status.
