New Delhi: The Supreme Court Friday issued a notice to the CBI on the bail plea of former Jharkhand minister Enos Ekka who is in jail for over two years in a disproportionate assets case.

A bench headed by Justice Aftab Alam sought the response of the investigative agency on the status of the case against Ekka, who was a minister in the erstwhile BJP-led NDA and Madhu Koda-led coalition governments.

The court passed the order on the petition filed by Ekka challenging the Jharkhand High Court's verdict denying him bail.

Ekka was arrested in 2009 along with Harinarayan Rai, also a former minister during the same period, after a social activist filed a PIL before the Jharkhand High Court accusing them of amassing wealth more than their known sources of income during their tenure between 2005 and 2008.

Earlier, the apex court had rejected the bail pleas of Ekka and Rai on March 18, 2011.

The apex court had dismissed their pleas, saying the CBI was still probing the case and there were serious allegations against them.
