Ranchi: Jharkhand assembly Speaker C P
Singh on Saturday pitched for journalists, who work under difficult
situations, should get proper security and state-initiated
schemes reach them so that they don`t have to worry about the
families future while discharging professional duties.

Addressing the inaugural two-day session of the
National Union of Journalists (India) national council meeting
here, Singh said media persons sometimes work at places facing
life threats like the situation in Kargil war.

The media thus deserved security and financial schemes
which should be supported by the respective state governments.

"State governments should take care of these things,"
Singh said, adding if financial benefits were given the future
of journalists family and their children’s education could be
secure.

Underscoring the need to maintain the media`s image of
being watchdog of the society, Singh said the fourth pillar of
a democratic system ought to strike a balance between
positive and negative reports.

Mincing no words on "TRP-driven coverage by the
electronic media," Singh said "they say journalists show
mirror to others, but few in media watch it themselves."

The Speaker also condemned the assault on Union
Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Thursday and asserted
violence has no place in a democratic setup.

"Why news channels show the footage throughout the day
which appear as if the assaulter attempts a series of slaps,"
Singh said.
