Jharkhand wants additional forces for panchayat polls

Jharkhand has urged the Centre to send 250 companies of additional forces to prevent a possible threat of the left-wing extremism during the five-phase panchayat elections beginning November 27.

Ranchi: Jharkhand has urged the Centre to
send 250 companies of additional forces to prevent a possible
threat of the left-wing extremism during the five-phase
panchayat elections beginning November 27.

"The additional forces were required as extremists
could create problems because they did not want elections for
rural bodies as they believe it could impede their campaign,"
Chief Secretary A K Singh told newsmen.

"The Chief Minister (Arjun Munda) has already
requested union home minister about the additional forces. And
now a letter will be sent to the Centre again," Singh said
here.

The BDOs and the circle officers would be returning
officers while officials at various wings have also been
posted with executive magistrate powers.

The last phase of the elections are scheduled on
December 24.
