Jamshedpur: Jharkhand People's Party (JPP) leader Kanchan Kumar Mandal was killed by unidentified men while he was returning home from duty, police said on Thursday.

Mandal, who was block secretary of JPP's Potka area near here, was fatally attacked with sharp weapons while he was returning on bicycle to his home in Sundernagar, last night.

The exact cause behind the killing could not be ascertained but a feud over a piece of land with his relatives could be a possibility, police suspected adding that a massive hunt was on the apprehend the culprits.

40-year-old Mandal was an active participant of the separate Jharkhand statehood movement.

One person was detained for questioning in this connection.

Senior police officials including Senior Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Kumar Jha rushed to the spot this morning to take stock of the situation.

Meanwhile, JPP and its students' wing All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) served a 24-hour ultimatum to the district administration to arrest the culprits, otherwise the two alongwith Jharkhand Andolankari Manch (JAM), a body of separate Jharkhand movement activists, will launch a massive agitation soon.

They have called for Potka Block bandh tomorrow in support of their demand, said Surya Singh Besra, president of JPP.

Earlier, JPP-AJSU strongly protested the killing and did not allow the police to conduct post-mortem till the culprits were apprehended, Besra said.

A named FIR has been registered against five persons based on the statement of the victim's brother.
