Panchayats to be made self-sustainable: J’khand CM

Arjun Munda said efforts were on to help panchayats mobilise their resources so that the local bodies could develop their own areas.

Ranchi: Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun
Munda on Monday said efforts were on to help panchayats mobilise
their resources so that the local bodies could develop their
own areas.

"The state government wants to strengthen the
panchayat system through devolution of powers, resource
mobilisation (at their level), so that growth of panchayats
could be sustainable," Munda told the assembly.

Replying during `chief minister`s question hour` in
the house, Munda said there were about 57,000 representatives
in the three-tier panchayat system and the state would support
them through the devolution of powers.

He had also written to the Centre asking it to allot
MGNREGA funds straight to the panchayats show the local
elected bodies would ensure employment at their level.

On the issue of adequate compensation to victims of
natural calamities, Munda said the government would discuss on
the matter.

The government would also soon approve Bengali and
Santhali languages to give them second language status and the
cabinet would take a decision as per rules on the demands of
other tribal languages like Ho, Mundari, Khadia and Kuduk.
