Security persons open fire on protesters in Bokaro

Security forces on Friday opened fire to disperse violent protesters who were objecting to construction activities being carried out by Bokaro Steel Plant, leaving three persons injured.

Magistrate Manoj Jasiwal was severely injured after
locals and protesters under the banner of `Bachho Sangharsh
Morcha` started pelting stones stones, an official said.

The protesters were opposing the construction of a
boundary wall and gate by the plant near Addakyari in Bokaro
district, some 130 km from Ranchi.

"The local administration, police and the CISF were
present to ensure that a perimeter wall be constructed to
safeguard the plant as cases of theft were reported. But the
locals started throwing stones severely injuring the
magistrate and some security personnel. Hence, both police and
CISF fired in air and uses baton to disperse the crowd," the
official said.

One of the agitators, Amrit Mahato, was hit by a
bullet and admitted to Bokaro General Hospital, Deputy
Commissioner Nitin Madan Kulkarni told reporters. Two other
protesters were also injured in baton charge.

SAIL officials could not be contacted for comments.

The plant officials have been insisting that the
boundary wall was being constructed on land owned by the
plant.
