Security tightened in Maoist-hit area before polls

Security has been tightened in the five Maoist-hit blocks of Palamu district of Jharkhand in view of the 3rd phase of panchayat polls slated on Monday.

"The security arrangement have been stepped up in Harihargunj, Pipra, Hussainabad, Haidernagar and Mohammadgunj blocks which will go to polls tomorrow," Superintendent of Police Anup T Mathew told newsmen today.

Apart from the district police, the para-military force jawans have also been deputed to meet any eventuality during panchayat polls, he said.
The panchayat polls are taking place in the state after 32 years, he said.

A BSF chopper was kept ready to rush, Mathew said.

The district administration has sealed the border with Bihar and set up checkposts at 14 points to prevent the entry of anti-social elements, he said.

Maoists have called for boycott of the panchayat polls.
