Ranchi: Altogether 710 companies of security
forces will oversee the third of the 5-phase panchayat
elections on Monday with more places marked as sensitive in
Maoist-affected districts in Jharkharnd.
"In this phase of election, we are entering more
sensitive zones like Porahat in Khunti, Chenpur in Gumla,
Manika and Barwadih in Latehar, Gomia and Jhumra hills in
Bokaro, Kuchai in Sareikela, Pratappur in Chatra and Dumka`s
Shikaripara, Gopikandar and Kathikund," Inspector General of
Police, RK Malik (Operation), told a joint press conference
with state Election Commissioner S D Sharma.
Stating that three helicopters are on stand-by, Malik
said police were prepared to counter "any attempt to attack
police parties by Maoists to loot their weapons."
Sharma said that he was confident that the electorate
would come out in large numbers to cast their votes. A total
of 32,58,020 voters were eligible to vote for 40,471
candidates for members of gram panchayat, panchayat samiti and
Zila Parishad besides electing mukhias.
