Campaigning for Karnataka Assembly polls ends today Bangalore: The campaigning for the May 5 Assembly polls in Karnataka will come to an end on Friday evening.

Almost all the political parties have roped in their national leaders to campaign for the polls and are trying to reach the maximum voters through rallies and visits.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi are among others who addressed rallies in Karnataka for the upcoming polls.

Campaigning for Karnataka Assembly polls ends today An estimated 2,900 candidates have entered the fray for the polls.

Indian National Congress (INC) has fielded 224 candidates, while the BJP has given tickets to 223 candidates this time.

Elections to the 224-member Karnataka Legislative Assembly are to be held on May 5 and the counting of votes will be taken up on May 8.

The election in one constituency was countermanded due to the death of BJP candidate in Periyapattana in Mysore district. The election in this constituency will be held on May 28.

Campaigning for Karnataka Assembly polls ends today In the 2008 Assembly Elections, the BJP secured 33.86 per cent of votes and had managed to get 110 seats, compared to the Congress' 34.59 percent which gave it only 80 seats. JDS, with 19.13 percent, was third with 28 seats, while six independents were also victorious.

But this time the presence of Karnataka Janatha Party, BSR Congress and greater presence of Samajwadi party and BSP has made the election multifarious in the state.
