Torrential rains lashed northern parts of Karnataka, claiming at least 20 lives besides causing widespread damage to properties and disrupting normal life, official sources said on Wednesday.

While ten deaths were reported due to house collapse from
Bijapur, six died in Belgaum, two in Glubarga and one each in
Bagalkot and Raichur districts due to the downpour, they said.
Heavy damages to house and property were reported from
Belgaum, Bijapur and Gadag while Haveri, Dharwad, Bagalkot,
Koppal, Gulbarga and Raichur districts were also adversely
affected with over 100 cases of house collapse being reported
from rural areas of the districts.

Deputy Commissioner, Bijapur district, R Shantharaj said
Rs 10,000 each was being paid as compensation to those whose
houses had collapsed in Bijpur.
Standing crops in thousands of acres of land was
submerged and several low-lying areas inundated in North
Karnataka, the authorities said, adding a relief centre had
been opened in Mangalagudda in Bagalkot district as the entire
village was inundated.
