Bangalore: Relieved over the arrest of Jaishankar, who escaped from the central prison at Parappana Agrahara, the Bangalore police are determined to ensure that the convicted killer will not be able to stage his Houdini act again.
KV Gagandeep, additional director general of police (ADGP) for prisons, said that Jaishankar, who was currently in police custody, would be lodged in a high security cell in one of the state’s many top prisons, when his custody was given to the prison department.
“We would consider all options. He might be kept in Bangalore, or we might move him to a different jail of the state,” Gagandeep remarked.
Doctors will visit Jaishankar in his cell and he won’t be taken to the jail hospital or any other medical facility for treatment. A CCTV camera will be installed in his cell to keep a round-the-clock eye on him, and furthermore a police guard would also be deputed to watch the cell, Gagandeep said.
“The department will take steps to arrange lighting in darker areas of Parappana Agrahara central jail premises,” he underlined.
Top police officers claim that there was no collusion by jail staff in Jaishankar’s escape. Gagandeep and additional commissioner (crime) BK Singh also rejected reports that spoke of jail staff having a party on the night of the jailbreak.
The two officers denied that Jaishankar had got the key to his cell from jail staff, claiming that he had used a “duplicate” key to let himself out of the cell before he scaled the inner and outer walls of the prison to get out.
“The key is recovered from the garden area. There is sufficient reason to believe that he a used duplicate key,” they said.
Jaishankar took just about an hour to escape from the prison. Firstly, he tried to climb the 20 feet high wall in hospital ward. When he could not do it, he managed to climb the grill gate which opens to the banana grove inside the prison.
From there, he climbed up on another wall and walked along the parapet wall to reach the outer perimeter wall of the prison. Walking along the wall embedded with glass pieces on top, Jaishankar injured his feet. But, he managed to cross the electric fence and jumped off the wall onto the muddy ground outside, surviving the fall, but getting injured in the bargain.
