Bangalore: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday got annoyed when he was bombarded with questions on the rape of a six-year-old in a school here.
“Is this the only news you have?,” the Karnataka CM asked reporters when he was asked to comment on the incident that has triggered protests across the city and terrified the whole nation.
Siddaramaiah added: "Whatever action is required we will take that...Wherever we can invoke the gunda act we will do that.”
He also accused the opposition BJP of reaping political gains from the case.
The BJP has intensified protests in the city against the Congress-led rule in the state. Former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, Karnataka BP chief Prahlad Joshi and other BJP leaders joined the protest against the incident today.
Yeddyurappa has also written to the Centre seeking direction to schools to make moral education compulsory.
MN Reddi, who has taken charge as the Bangalore police commissioner in the place of Raghavendra Auradkar, today met the parents of the six-year-old, who was allegedly raped in Vibgyor High School on July 02.
Reddi said, "I held a detailed conversation with the parents and listened to their concerns, the issues and the problems that they are facing. We tried to chalk out a way, whereby the basic concerns can be quickly addressed by the management. We would advice the management to resolve those issues, whether they are related to safety or security."
"Parents want children to go to the school. In the interest of those who are not attending school, the school has to be open. Hopefully in a week or so, the school should open," Reddy said.
In another important development to be tracked today is the meeting between a delegation of parents and authorities of Vibgyor High School. The parents will then decide whether they would send their children to the school after the incident.
The school has been shut since July 17.
Police arrested skating instructor Mustafa late Sunday on the charge of sexually assaulting the six-year-old in a classroom on July 02.
Irate parents have been protesting against school management for its failure in protecting the child.
As a fallout of the incident, the Karnataka government on Monday transferred Bangalore police commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar and Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Kamal Pant.
Auradkar faced public wrath over the handling of the rape cases, including that of a 22-year-old college student and a 17-year-old seminary student in the city in the last 10 days leading to angry protests and demonstrations.
The official order was issued on a day when the city witnessed a series of protests by hundreds of students, social activists and women`s organisations against rising crimes against women and girls in Bangalore and across the state.
