Central team visits drought-hit areas in Karnataka

A 12-member Central team, deputed to study drought conditions in parts of Karnataka, on Monday visited parts of Chikkaballapura and Tumkur districts.



Bangalore: A 12-member Central team, deputed to study drought conditions in parts of Karnataka, on Monday visited parts of Chikkaballapura and Tumkur districts.

The team, headed by Small Farmers Agri Business Consortium Managing Director Parvesh Sharma, which arrived here last evening, left to review the drought conditions in the two districts after holding discussions with the officials of the revenue department.

The team, which is scheduled to review the drought conditions in the state for two days, is also scheduled to tour Kolar and Chitradurga districts.

The Karnataka government has declared 123 of the 176 taluks as drought-hit in the state.

The team`s visit comes against the backdrop of the memorandum submitted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh by an all party delegation led by Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda seeking Rs 1,500 crore as interim relief.

According to revenue officials, the deputy commissioners of the four districts have been directed to provide all information on the drought situation to the Central team.
