Chennai: A day after demanding a CBI probe into the 1993 Palar landmine blast case in which four aides of slain forest brigand Veerappan are facing death sentence, DMK Chief M Karunanidhi on Tuesday said India should join the countries which had opposed it.
"In 2007, when a resolution was brought before the UN against death sentence, 104 countries supported it. India was among the 39 countries which had opposed it," he said in his party organ Murasoli.
Noting that 90 per cent of countries in the world have abolished death sentence following the UN resolution, he said, "India should also join the list of majority. That is my view and that of several others."
Referring to the four aides of Veerappan facing the gallows, he said they had already spent nine years in jail and sought to know whether the law allows double punishments for a single crime.
The DMK chief said after the hanging of 26/11 attacks convict Ajmal Kasab and Parliament attack accused Afzal Guru and the four Veerappan aides facing death sentence, there is a "strong feeling" among people that there should be a full stop to such harsh punishments.
