One more PFI worker arrested from Mangalore

An activist of radical outfit Popular Front of India has been arrested in connection with the brutal attack on a college lecturer here on July 4.

Muvattpuzha: An activist of radical outfit Popular Front of India has been arrested in connection with the brutal attack on a college lecturer here on July 4.

Pareed (32), a driver, who was directly involved in the attack on Prof T J Joseph, was arrested in Mangalore yesterday by the Special Investigation team probing the case and brought here on Friday, police sources said.

With this, 23 PFI workers have been arrested in connection with the incident. Joseph`s right hand was chopped off allegedly by PFI activists for preparing a question paper with ``derogatory references`` to Prophet Mohammad.

Moovattupuzha Circle Inspector P P Shams and his team arrested Pari, the driver of the van in which the assailants reached Muvattupuzha and attacked Joseph, police said. He has been charged with the various offences of IPC including attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, rioting, Arms Act and Explosive Act.
The accused was produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate court here on Friday and remanded to police Custody for 10 days. As the controversy broke over the question paper, he was suspended by the college authorities and later dismissed.
