Bangalore: As part of steps to resolve
man-elephant conflict in the state, Karnataka Forest Minister
CP Yogeshwar on Saturday suggested strict measures including
stopping encroachment of forest land by resorts and jungle
lodges and industry.
Yogeshwar suggested these measures at a brainstorming
session on human-elephant conflict attended by experts
including Chief Conservator of Forests Ajai Desai, Principal
Chief Conservator of Forests AK Verma, CCF (Wildlife) BK
Singh and Principal Secretary Koushik.
The session was held in the wake of the High Court
direction to the state government to frame ways and means to
end man-elephant conflict.
For the last one decade more than 250 elephants had
died and an equal number of people killed in Karnataka in
the conflict. Elephants entering agriculture fields in the
borders of forests has become a common sight in the recent
past.
The hotspots of human-elephant conflict in the State
include Hassan, Coorg, Mysore, Mandya, Chamarajnagar,
Bennerghatta National Park.
Verma suggested formation of Mobile Squads to monitor the
movement of elephants.
