New Delhi: The Election Commission on Wednesday censured CPI(M) candidate from Nemom assembly constituency in Kerala for obstructing poll officials from performing their duty.

The EC said V Sivankutty and his partymen forced the District Magistrate and his team to leave the spot when they went to check whether the booth convention organised by the candidate on March 28 had prior permission from authorities.

The EC team was prevented from performing its official duty of video graphing of the election event, leading to filing of a police complaint against the candidate, the EC said.

In response to EC notice, Sivankutty said the allegations levelled against him were not correct and denied his party workers had obstructed election officers in discharging their duty.

"The Commission is of the considered view that Sivankutty and his supporters had indeed stopped the election team to visit the site where the candidate held an election meet unauthorisdely", an EC order said.

Sivankutty not only made an attempt to suppress the election expenses but was also responsible for creating obstruction to the election expense monitoring team from performing its official duty, the EC said.
