Port Blair: Twenty-three Myanmarese
nationals were apprehended by Coast Guard on the charge of
catching sea cucumbers, an endangered marine species, from the
waters of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Coast Guard officials said they were held with two
mechanised boats when trying to flee after catching sea
cucumbers from shallow waters off the North Reef and Paget
The poachers on sighting the Coast Guard ship tried to
flee but were chased and caught after firing warning shots
from small firearms, sources said.
Large catch of sea cucumbers was recovered from both
the boats, Coast Guard officers said.
The detained Myanmarese nationals and the boats were
handed over to the police at Diglipur.
Eighty-one Myanmarese nationals along with 7 boats
were arrested last year for allegedly catching sea cucumbers.
