CBI files chargesheet in tourture case against cops

CBI filed chargesheet against 13 policemen, including a DYSP & Circle Inspector, in connection with the custodial torture & death of Udaykumar at Thiruvananthapuram in Sept 2005.

Kochi: The CBI on Monday filed chargesheet against 13 policemen, including a DYSP and Circle Inspector, in connection with the case relating to the custodial torture and death of Udaykumar at the Fort Police station at thiruvananthapuram in Sept 2005.

The 45-page chargesheet was filed before P Vijayan, Chief judicial magistrate court, here. Though the CBI sought permission to prosecute DYSP E K Sabu, Circle Inspector T Ajith Kumar and V P Mohan kumar Head constable-- 13th and 14 and 6th accused respectively in the case under section 302 (murder), the home ministry denied permission for the same.

The three would be prosecuted under other charges of conspiracy, destroying evidence etc. Three constables-- K Jitha Kumar, S C Sreekumar and K Soman have been charged for murder. According to the chargesheet, the three carried out the torture for over an hour following which Udaykumar died of a broken vein. The remaining accused have been chargesheeted for various offences including conspiracy, forgery and destroying
evidence.

Other accused in the case are: Ravindran Nair (reitred Sub Inspector), George (retired Assistant Sub inspector), K Thangamani (ASI), Ramachandran (Head constable), Sheeja (woman constable), Sajitha (woman onstable), Heeralal (ASI).
Suresh kumar, who was arrested along with udaykumar, has been named as accused, as he turned hostile. The investigating agency has also filed a petition to make 8 accused as approvers, including 3 women constables.

Udaykumar was arrested along with another person on September 27, 2005 in connection with a robbery case and Udaykuamr died two days later. The local police first investigated the case. Not statisfied with the investigation, Udaykumar`s mother,
Prabhavathy filed a petition in the kerala high court following which CBI probe was ordered.
