Centralised collection and treatment of waste mooted

The Kerala High court on Monday directed the government to look into the establishment of centralised collection and treatment of waste in the state.

Kochi: The Kerala High court on Monday directed
the government to look into the establishment of centralised
collection and treatment of waste in the state.

If a state level agency is set up for collection of solid
waste, bio medical waste and other wastes, treatment plants
could be set up at regional centres so that each local body
need not set up their own plants, the court said.

A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice P R
Raman and C N Ramachandran Nair issued the direction on a
petition filed by Association for Environmental Protection,
Aluva, complaining of accumulation of waste in Periyar river.

The bench also suggested introduction of levy on
household, hotels, hospitals and markets to meet the massive
cost of land adoption and setting up and running of plants.

The court said if the government was not ready to source
the fund from public through levy, local bodies could be made
to contribute for management of plants.
