Thiruvananthapuram: Bharatiya Janata Mahila Morcha national president Smriti Irani today termed as 'hypocrtical' the approach of the Congress and CPI-M towards women's issues.

While claiming that they were taking up the cause of women, the two parties had not yet given due representation to women in their organisational set-up, Irani said, inaugurating the zonal conference of the BJMM here.

She said women were fighting for survival in the states ruled by Congress and the CPI-M. In West Bengal, only 'women who sang lal salam' were getting jobs. "The situation is such that women have to follow the political ideology of CPI-M for employment and life security," she said.

In Kerala, only women having allegiance to the Left could find a place in the 'Kudumbasree' project, she said.

Stating that Congress' approach towards women was also dishonest, she said the party had opposed reservation for women in the Rajya Sabha. The UPA government also appealed against giving pension to women in uniform, she alleged.

Irani said the Congress was 'enjoying power' and would do anything to cling to power. The UPA government was spending thousands of crores of rupees for the Commonwealth Games when 40 percent of the population in the country were suffering for want of at least a meal in a day, she said.
