Thiruvananthapuram: In a dramatic incident at the fast track court here, a former police sub-inspector who was reported `dead` by the police appeared before the court as witness in an abkari (liquor) case.

"I am alive," Selvaraj, former Assistant Sub-Inspector of Neyyattinkara municipality in the district, submitted before the court yesterday during his dramatic appearance.

Selvaraj had been reported `dead` to the court by police in December last year when the court asked the inspector to be
produced as a witness in the abkari case. Selvaraj had filed the chargesheet in the case, involving one Raju of Athiyannur, when he was ASI of Neyyattinkara.

Police had said Selvaraj had died in August 2004 and had also produced a medical certificate to support their claim. Selvaraj, who is now retired from service, came to know about the case when he appeared before the court last week as witness in a similar case.

Following this, he appeared before the court to `testify` that he was `alive.`
However, the court did not take up the case yesterday and
posted it for July 7.
