Porayar: After a 30 year gap, the float
festival will find a place in the annual Brahmotsavam of the
famous Karaikal Ammaiyar temple at Karaikal this year and will
begin on March 31.
Leader of the opposition in Puducherry Assembly A M H
Nazeem said that renovating the tank and reviving the past
glory of the Brahmotsavam festival was his dream project.
His persistent efforts over the last 10 years to sanction
funds had paid off as tourism ministry sanctioned Rs 3.47
crore for the project.
He said renovation works had commenced last year. The tank
was being renovated with a float at the middle. Water in the
tank would be purified through filters. PWD would undertake
construction of compound walls, high mast lamps and
horticultural works, he said.
He said the tank had fallen into disuse due to encroachments
Nazeem said legend has it that Karaikal Ammaiyar, the lone
woman saint among the 63 saivaite nayanmars, lived at Karaikal
in the 5th century AD. This temple had a huge tank where float
festival used to take place. In course of time, the tank lost
its beauty due to encroachments.
Nazeem expressed hope that the renovation would place
Karaikal Ammaiyar temple in the list of pilgrim centres in
India maintained by the Tourism Ministry.
Nazeem has taken the lead role in renovating three
important temples at Karaikal - Ammaiyar temple, Somanathar
temple and Ezhai Mariamman temple. Karaikal Ammaiyar temple
Kumbabishekam was held last year. Renovation of other two
temples is going on.
