Govt to stregthen police- excise dept coordination

Kerala government has decided to stregthen the coordination between police and excise departments to ensure such tragedies does not recur, home minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, on Saturday said.

Kochi: With the hooch tragedy in
Malappuram claiming 26 lives so far, Kerala government whas
decided to stregthen the coordination between police and
excise departments to ensure such tragedies does not
recur, home minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, on Saturday said.

Excise and police officials will jointly collect samples of
illicit toddy and send it to testing laboratories, kodiyeri
told reporters here.

Every effort would be taken to ensure that spurious toddy
is not allowed inside the state, he said.

On allegations of police and excise officials being hand in
glvoe with the powerful spirit lobby, he said if the probe
reveals a nexus as alleged, stringent action would be taken
against those involved.

Government will also probe to find out if the spirit lobby
was behind the death of Sampath, a murder accused who died
allegedly due to police torture while in custody, to ensure
action against certain police officials, he said.
