Head of Latin Catholic church in Kerala passes away

The head of the Latin Catholic church in Kerala, Archbishop Daniel Acharuparambil, passed away at a hospital here this morning.

Kochi: The head of the Latin Catholic church
in Kerala, Archbishop Daniel Acharuparambil, passed away at a
hospital here this morning.

He was 71 and died of kidney failure, a spokesman of the
Kerala Catholic Bishop`s Council (KCBC) said today.

Acharuparambil, who was also the KCBC president, was
admitted to the private Louredes hospital here in a critical
condition on Saturday and was put on ventilator.

Though his condition showed some improvement yesterday, he
passed away at 11.10 am, spokesperson Father Stephen Althara
told news agencies.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday afternoon at the St
Albert High school.

Archbishop Acharuparambil was an Indologist and had taught
Indian Philosophy in various universities abroad for 30 years.
He also authored books on Hindu philosophy, Hindu religion,
life and its perspectives, church sources said.

Cardinal Mar Varkey Vithayathil, the head of the Syro
Malabar church, expressed grief at the passing away of the
Archbishop.

"By fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to him by
God, he has converted his life into a rosary of repetitive
acts of love," he said.
