Thiruvananthapuram: Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a partner in the Congress led UDF Opposition coalition in Kerala, on Saturday claimed that the party has become the third largest political party in terms of seats won in the recently held civic polls.
Election results also re-established that there was no alternative to IUML in the state, Party State General Secretary P K Kunhalikutty told reporters here today. Congress got a total of 7235 seats in the civic bodies, CPI-M 6277 and IUML 1904, Kunhalikutty said.
Kerala society had rejected the `radical` ideas of parties like PDP of Abdul Naser Madani and SDPI, the political arm of Popular Front of India, allegedly involved in chopping off the hand college lecturer, Kunhalikutty said.
PDP and SDPI could manage only few seats in the polls, he pointed out.
Referring to the drubbing the CPI-M led LDF received in the hands of UDF, Kunhalikutty said CPI-M politics had become outdated and poll outcome clearly showed that decline of LDF have started as in the case West Bengal.
The myth created by CPI-M that they were the real champions of minorities also broke in the last polls, he said adding CPI-M had always played communal card during elections for getting votes.
Anti-establishment wave and unholly tie up CPI-M had with parties like PDP, SDPI and Jamait E Islami had also contributed to the defeat of LDF in the civic polls, he said.
Making it clear that UDF would not have any post election tie up with any communal parties, Kunhalikutty said poll result was a recognition to the secular ideas upheld by IUML.
IUML maintain good relation with Congress and party did not wish to have any change in the present political Front, he said.
On BJP`s performance in civic polls, he said BJP had not made any gains, but had performed only in its traditional places.
