Kozhikode: Kerala Government Chief Whip PC George on Friday said his party had not backtracked from the Mullaperiyar Dam agitation, but only temporarily stopped since Prime minister Manmohan Singh had given assurance to initiate steps to resolve the issue.

Speaking to media persons here, George said that he was pained to see the happenings in Tamil Nadu against Keralites. 'I have been receiving number of telephone calls from Keralite students from Tamil Nadu on their plight'.

Kerala Congress (Mani) had only temporarily stopped the Mullaperiyar dam agitation considering the assurance of Singh.

Urging the Centre and state Governments to initiate immediate steps to solve the dam issue, George said people in the five district of Kerala, who will be directly affected in the event of any eventuality, were spending sleepless nights.

'Water for Tamil Nadu and safety for the people of Kerala' is the slogan of the state, he said.
