Kerala HC grants bail to CPI(M) MLA in suicide case

Kochi, Mar 6 (PTI) CPI(M) MLA James Mathew, who was arrested on charges of abetting suicide of a school headmaster in Kannur district, was today granted bail by the Kerala High Court.
Granting bail to Mathew and another accused M V Shaji in the case, Justice B Kemal Pasha directed them to report before the investigation officer for a period of three months or till the filing of the final report in the case whichever is earlier.
The court also fixed time and days of their appearance before the officer probing the case.
The MLA was arrested on February 27 on charges of abetting the suicide of the school headmaster in December last.
Mathew, a member of the CPI (M) state committee, had surrendered at Sreekandapuram police station in Kannur district. The first-time MLA from Thaliparamba was arrested after the police recorded his statement.
The High Court had earlier rejected his anticipatory bail in the suicide case.
Shaji had surrendered before police on February 17 in connection with the case.
E P Sasidharan, Headmaster of Tagore Vidhya Niketan Higher Secondary School at Thaliparamba, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at a lodge in Kasargod.
He had left a suicide note accusing Shaji and Mathew of harassing him over administration of the school and forcing him to take the extreme step, according to the prosecution.
Both of them have been charged with abetting suicide of the headmaster.
Dismissing their anticipatory bail pleas, the court had said on February 12 their custodial interrogation was necessary.
