Kerala’s high speed rail project on track soon

Thiruvananthapuram: Billed as the biggest and most expensive infrastructure projects conceived by Kerala, a high speed rail corridor for India's first bullet train is one of the mega projects the state plans to implement.

On completion, it will enable one to travel from Kerala's capital Thiruvananthapuram to the state's northern most point Kasaragod in 142 minutes, covering a distance of 526 km.

The project may sound unbelievable, especially in the case of Kerala lagging in industry and infrastructure development for decades.

Estimated to cost Rs 1,18,000 crore on completion, the first phase is expected to cost Rs 43,000 crore. It will also be showcased in 'Emerging Kerala Global Connect' at Kochi from September 12-14.

"If all preparatory works progress on schedule and the project starts by April 2013 as planned, the first phase is expected to be completed in five years and the second in the following two years. The whole project should be complete by 2020," said T Balakrishnan, CMD, Kerala High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (KHSRCL).

"Work of drawing up the Detailed Project Report is now on. Alignment study/survey has started; preparatory work on land acquisition has also begun. Recruitment of key personnel has begun," Balakrishnan, a former bureaucrat, said.

Nine stations are proposed initially - Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur Kasaragod and in the final stretch to Mangalore in Karnataka. Three more at Chengannur, Tirur and Thalassery, would come up at a later stage.

The total corridor length (upto Mangalore) would be around 571 km and it will have two parallel tracks each in standard gauge systems, independent of existing rail network in Kerala.

The government has appointed Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation as the nodal agency for the project, which could transform lives and economy by facilitating hassle free movement between cities and towns in ‘God’s own country’.

"A public transport system of this dimension has so many advantages. Most important, it will help reduce traffic density and improve road safety," said KSIDC Managing Director Alkesh Sharma.

A State which has been backward in industrialization as well on other developmental projects. Heard that the state is reeling under a water and electricity crisis for years and this news is another irony for the people who can witness the bullet train whizz before their eyes while waiting for water with a dose of a daily power cut! Incredible India!!

HSRC is another well wrapped deceit in the name of development . The adverse impact this will have on our economy, Social set up , environment, eco balance would be unimaginable. The authorities are holding on to this project for reasons well known. Huge amount of funds will be transacted. This can help a few Mr.Rich travel faster but we the common people will have to take the brunt. We have so many unmanned railway crossings where many people die, have the worst roads not travel worthy, we have ever rising prices of essential commodities, we have innumerable issues of intra structure and still we want High Speed Rail to be built making each of us indebted to foreign so called partners for so many years. This is the best example of our government not knowing the actual need of the people but dwell on their fantasies and hidden agendas. This is against the very principle Mahatma Ghandhiji upheld that to think about the poorest of the poor , when we plan anything to be done in the country, do they benefit… This mega project is help only may be 1 or 2% of the people and still they try to convince us that this project is the need of this hour…. Very disheartening…

Thi shigh speed rail project is damage the houses, relegious places and present environment in Kerala villages. It brak the normal people hearts in the alignment area as the noise and vibration of bullet train will be miserable to people close to the new railway. Kerala`s 99% people travel max 30 kilometers daily for their job or buisness and the high speed rail, only help remaining 1%.At present most of the People using their motorcycle or car instead of public transport and it create pollution, rush in the roads and accidents. Only metro rail all over Kerala (instead of High Speed Rail) and Good roads & good bus services will help people to use public transport. Please check and follow Dubai Metro and Bus service. Consider whole Kerala as a city like Dubai. 1.20 lakh crore Rupees High speed rail can afford and help only minority ( instead they can travel flight )but other transport system like Metro, Bus, Waterway will help majority. Goods transportation need long travel and HSR can not be used for that so use the money wisely like modify & maintain our existing roads, introduce metros, waterways.

The proposed HSRC is no need to built inside the rural areas, as the many villagers will loose theri small small land and they can`t find another suitable place to built new house. this is programme is not suitable or benefit anyone, only some of the business or govt. officials will take benefit through this project. I strongly suggest to all common people inside the rural areas where the survey conducted to not leave their life and property for such programme. I observed that the main agenda is make the state as poor as poor and take huge bribe in this way. Also many people like to propose the project parallel to existing raily line from K to T.

As per my understanding this rail is going 15 Meters Height. So any chance to get a road under this rail in Kalamassery to Vytila. It will remove the traffic block in edapilly

If the alignment survey for HSRC being conducted in my village is any indication, HSRC is going to a huge eviction project. Alignment survey of the passage is being conducted within a span of 110 meters. Thousands of houses and other buildings will be destroyed. People have already opposed and obstructed the survey in residential areas in Kottayam, Ernanakulam and Alappuzha districts. Total area acquired will be well above 15324 acres if the passage has width of 110 meters. This will divide Kerala into two and cause irreparable damages to environment. Also the project will be a drag on the finances of the State due to huge expenditure involved. Is such a mega project desirable in a land deficient state like Kerala?

Exellent idea... Kerala is called a land scarce state but most of the land is lying unused. No one wants to farm the land, everyone is just waiting for land prices to go up so they can sell it. Infrastructure can transform the state at a very fast clip. Go Kerala Go

Will the project be another proverbial white elephant like KSRTC? To build the rail is one thing, but to operate and maintain it another. After spending so much crores and causing distress to the property owners whose lands are acquired, will the project meet the needs of the average Keraleeyan? Will the fare for travel by such a train be significantly less than airfare for a similar travel? So long as our existing rail and road networks are not functioning effectively what is the use of spending more money on new projects? The NH 47 project is still lagging behing the schedule. In places where the main highways have been built, service roads have not been constructed. Such being the state of affairs on public utility projects, will the benefits of the new project match the money and efforts going to be spend on it?
