Sabarimala: In a first of its kind incident
here, 4-year-old pilgrim, who was on his way to the famous
Ayyappa shrine here, was pulled away from his father by a
stranger who tried to escape with the child.
However, thanks to the prompt action of the polcie, the
child was rescued within minutes. A search for the kidnapper
is still going on in the forest area adjacent to the trekking
path.

The incident occurred near Marakkoottam yesterday morning.
Aromal, the son of K P Prasad, a native of Patanakkad in
Cherthala, was on his way to the `Sannidhanam` ( Sanctum
Sanctorum) holding his father?s hand, a Travancreo Devaswom
Board press release said. The child`s granmother and uncle
were also undertaking the pilgrimage.

A man without `irumudikettu` (sacred offering to the deity
which is carried by the pilgrims on their head) suddenly
appeared from the crowd behind them and snatched the child,
threw him on his shoulder and ran into the forest, Prasad
said.

Police on duty at the spot immediately alerted
authorities through wireless and search parties were instantly
dispatched. The kidnapper on seeing a police party coming
towards him, abandoned the child near ?Paramada? and ran into
the forests.
Police suspect that the abductor is not a keralite as he
was heard speaking to people in another language when he
started to run, Prasad said.

The Sannidhanam police have registered a case and
investigations are on. Police is examining the CCTV tapes from
the place.
