Kottayam: The Kerala Medicos Joint Action Council on Thursday welcomed the state Government Order to abolish Compulsory Rural Service and replaced it with Voluntary Rural Service for medical students.
Speaking to newsmen here, KMJAC vice-president Dr P S Jinesh said the order has brought the three-year service system down to one year.
"As per the G.O post-graduate students in government medical colleges and government merit quota students in self financing and cooperative medical colleges have to undergo one year mandatory bonded service.
This stipulation will be waived if they have already completed one year CRS," he said.
The G.O has also conceded the demand for allowing one time maternity benefits for medical students during their Post Graduate and super speciality courses.
Council secretary Dr K V Krishnadas said though CRS was scrapped, cumulative period of one-year bond for PG and super speciality students would ensure the service of senior or junior resident doctors at government hospitals.
