Kochi: Kerala High court on Friday observed that mercenary gangs were alarmingly on the increase in the state.

"They (the gangs) do not hesitate to do anything in the process of execution of their work", Justice K T Sankaran observed while dismissing a bail plea of DYSP Santosh Nair and other accused in a case relating to murder attempt on a journalist V B Unnithan of "Mathrubhumi" daily.

"In Kerala these gangs were available everywhere. It was high time we think of curbing the activities of such gangs", the court said.

If police officers engage these gangs for their private purpose, how could common man expect justice, the court asked.

The accused are in custody since May 13.

Unnithan was seriously injured in the attack against him by a mercenary gang at Sasthamcottah near Kollam on April 16, allegedly engaged by the DYSP who was unhappy with the scribe's reports against him.
