Nun murder: Framing of charges on July 28

A local court on Wednesday posted to July 28 framing of charges against two women working in a government lab for allegedly tampering with reports of chemical analysis tests in the Sister Abhaya murder case.

Thiruvananthapuram: A local court on Wednesday posted to July 28 framing of charges against two women working
in a government lab for allegedly tampering with reports of
chemical analysis tests in the Sister Abhaya murder case.

The chief judicial magistrate court deferred framing
of charges in view of the fact that the two women had
challenged the lower court proceedings in the high court.

Chief chemical examiner M Geetha and analyst R Chithra
of the chemical examination laboratory here were found to have
allegedly tampered with the visceral tests` results of the nun
who was found murdered in a convent in Kottayam in March 1992.

The murder case, which was closed by the state police
as suicide, was revived a few years ago following media
reports which said the test results were tampered to destroy
evidence.

The high court later ordered a fresh probe by CBI in
the case, which led to the arrest of two Catholic priests and
a nun, for their alleged involvement in the murder of Abhaya,
an inmate of the Pius X convent in Kottayam, whose body was
found lying in a well in the convent compound.

Kerala Police as well as CBI in their initial
investigation had concluded that it was a case of suicide. But
those who spearheaded public and legal campaigns for a free
and fair probe alleged there had been attempts to cover up the
truth by certain influential quarters.

The arrested were granted bail later and the trial of
the case is progressing in a special CBI court at Kochi.
