Palakkad (Kerala): The crime branch of the Kerala Police on Thursday filed a charge sheet against 12 police personnel, including two sub-inspectors and one assistant sub-inspector, in connection with the alleged custodial death of a prime suspect of a murder case.

The charge sheet filed by Crime Branch SP P S Unniraja in the First Class Judicial Magistrate Court here charged the accused with murder under IPC section 302.

The case relates to the death of Sampath, a prime suspect in the murder of a businessman's wife here.

The 47-year-old woman was found murdered with her throat slit and her 70-year-old mother seriously injured at their home on March 23.

Sampath and two others were arrested on March 28 from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu in connection with the murder case. But, before he was produced in court, Sampath died allegedly owing to custodial torture on March 30.

The postmortem report corroborated the allegation of Sampath's relatives that he had been the victim of police torture.

As the issue sparked strong reactions from political circles, a crime branch probe was ordered and a special investigation team set up.

However, no one has been arrested in connection with the case.
