Thiruvananthapuram: In more trouble for
former chief minister V S Achuthanandan`s son, the Lokayukta Friday approved vigilance probe into allegations of corruption and irregularities against V A Arun Kumar.
The court passed the order on a plea by the Kerala
government to close the case in view of the latter`s decision to order a vigilance probe.
The court, however, dismissed Kumar`s argument that the state government had no authority to withdraw a case once
referred to Lokayukta and order a vigilance probe.
Charges were levelled against Kumar towards the fag
end of the previous LDF rule by the present Chief Minister
Oommen Chandy, who was then heading the Congress-led UDF
After Chandy gave the charges in writing, LDF
government had referred the matter to the Lokayukta.
However, Chandy had insisted a vigilance probe into
the issue holding that Kumar, who was then a director of
Institute of Human Development Resources (IHRD), would not come under the purview of the Lokayukta.
Vigilance probe was ordered after the UDF came to
power by filing a petition seeking to withdraw the case in the
Charges against Kumar included foreign trips he had
undertaken while serving as managing director of the Kerala
State Cooperative Coir Marketing Federation Ltd and also
irregularities when he was the director of IHRD.
