Telephone facility for prison inmates

Tiruchirapalli: About 700 inmates of the Central prison here will soon get telephone facility to help them speak to relatives and counsels at restricted times.

Officials said eight telephones would intalled in the Prison at various Places including Tower Block, CP Block, Hospital and High security block.

The Tamilnadu Government`s ELCOT (Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited) is installing the telephone booths and service would be provided by BSNL
Incoming calls will not be allowed, the sources said.

Inmates obtaining telephone cards would be allowed to call only specific numbers. Prison officials will in turn cross check to ensure whether the number given to them is actually that of the prisoner`s relative. The booths will be connected to the prison control room and the entire conversation would be recorded.
