Coimbatore: Over 1,500 police personnel will be deployed across the city on Thursday on the 15th anniversary of the serial bomb blasts, which claimed 58 lives and injured over 200.
Police said though there is no specific threat, beefing up of security is a `routine affair`. Armed guards would be positioned at strategic points, including communally sensitive pockets and near places of worship, they said.
Checks would be carried out on vehicles and lodges to maintain law and order and all checkposts strengthened.
Meanwhile,the administration has denied permission to BJP, Sangh Parivar and Hindu Makkal Katchi to stage demonstrations or pay homage to those killed at RS Puram, the area where BJP president LK Advani was to address an election meeting on February 14 1998.
BJP and HMK leaders said they would go ahead with their programme at the spot and court arrest, if need be.
HMK, in a memorandum to city police Commissioner AK Vishwanathan requested that they be allowed to construct a memorial at RS Puram in memory of those killed in the blasts.
A cornerstone is planned to be installed there during the demonstration on Thursday, Bharat Senthil, HMK secretary, said.
BJP also plans to pay homage to those killed some 500 metres away from the spot.
Meanwhile, police said they would also keep a strict vigil on those indulging in `moral policing` tomorrow on `Valentine`s day` as
some outfits have already announced protests.
