Thiruvananthapuram: Two fishermen suffered bullet injuries allegedly when Coast Guard personnel aboard a patrolling vessel fired at their boat off Vizhinjam coast near here on Monday.
The Coast Guard is yet to give its version of the incident.
The boat owner from Kollam, however, said the fishermen were fired at by the personnel on a Coast Guard vessel after the boat crew failed to respond to the warnings to slow down for a search.
On reaching shore, the fishermen were rushed to the Medical College Hospital here and their injuries were stated to be not serious, police said.
The fishermen belonged to Thakkala in Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu. They were identified as Subin (20) and Clinton (23).
The boat which had nine fishermen aboard, was returning to Kollam after fishing in the sea off Kanyakumari area. It had been brought ashore and the remaining crew detained by the Coast Guard.
The owner of the boat, Jasmin George, said in Kollam that that the firing came from the Coast Guard vessel.
He said the boat crew might have failed to recognise the signals sent out by the patrolling vessel as they had been tired after fishing for the last several days.
